Description
A typically Art Deco Sterling Silver Toast Rack with a geometric arch and an "odeon" style handle. The Toast Rack was made by Henry Pidduck & Sons, a highly respected jeweller and silversmith who operated from premises in Market Street in Hanley near Stoke-on-Trent from 1841 until the 1980s. They are most famous as the makers of the Hales Trophy in 1935, awarded for the "blue riband" fastest crossing of the Atlantic by a passenger liner. Whilst not in that class, this is a very well made toast rack in a good gauge of silver. It was assayed in Birmingham and dates to 1938, the height of the Art Deco era.The Toast Rack is in excellent condition with no dings or dents. It sits perfectly on a flat surface and has a nice solid feel to it. It would add a touch of pure Art Deco elegance to any breakfast table or work perfectly on a tray for a luxurious breakfast in bed. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The toast rack is 7.7cm wide, 4.7cm deep and stands 7.8cm high to the top of the handle. It weighs in at a respectable 50g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the side of the base are well struck and clear to read although the makers' mark is getting a little rubbed. In addition at one end of the base is the retailers mark for Pidduck & Sons, Hanley. The hallmarks are the lion passant for Sterling silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "O" for 1938 and the H P & S makers' mark for Henry Pidduck & Sons Ltd.
