Description

This unusual Sterling Silver Cream Jug has a very modern look to it but actually dates to the middle of World War One. It was made in Birmingham in 1916 by silversmiths J. Aitkin & Son, who operated from premises in Spencer Street, Birmingham from around 1900 to about 1920. The Cream Jug has a flattened saucer shape and is set on a square base. It has a broad elongated spout and a simple curved handle, which give it a very striking profile.

This is a well made piece in a good gauge of silver. Overall condition is good with just one small ding to the rim between the handle and the hallmarks. Otherwise it just has the regular wear you would expect after a little over 100 years. It is entirely suitable for modern use and would be a stylish addition to morning coffee or afternoon tea. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The hallmarks on the side of the jug are well struck and clear to read with the exception of the makers' mark which is a little rubbed but still easy to decipher. They are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "r" for 1916 and the JA & S makers' mark for John Aitkin & Son.

The jug measures 12.9cm across from spout to handle, 8.8cm in diameter across the body and stands 5.2cm high to the top of the handle. It weighs in at a respectable 85.3g of solid Sterling Silver.
