Description

This is a lovely Victorian Sterling Silver Toast Rack with a stepped design and standing on four bun feet. The Toast Rack is made in Sheffield by silversmiths Atkin Brothers and dates to 1895. Although it has a look of Art Deco about it this piece is considerably earlier than the generally accepted start of Art Deco.

Atkin Brothers were fine makers of both silver and silver plate in Sheffield and were active for just over 100 years from 1853 to 1958 when they were bought by another company. The hallmarks on the front of the Toast Rack are well struck and clear to read.

The Toast Rack is in very good condition with no dings or dents. All the bars are straight and firmly attached and it sits absolutely true on a flat surface. It is perfect for ongoing use today or would make a great addition to a collection.

The rack is 8.2cm / 3.25" long, 5.5cm / 2.25" wide and stands 8.2cm / 3.25" high. It weighs a very respectable 67.3g / 2.37oz.

The hallmarks are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the gothic date letter "c" for 1895 and the HA makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
