Description

This is an elegant silver plated miniature planter in a beautiful Art Nouveau style by WMF of Germany. Dating to the late 19th / early 20th century it is produced in pre-oxidised silver plate. This was a very fashionable finish at the time as it made the silver plated items look much older than they were. So the marks you can see on this piece in the photographs are not tarnish or plate loss, they are very much part of the intended design.

The planter is an elongated oval with a handle at each end and a pierced scrolling foliate pattern along each side. The ends are decorated with a floral drop on each side joined by a closed leaf pattern. Inside is a small brass grid on which mini plant pots can stand. Although it has clearly been used during its life, condition is generally good with just a very small ding on the rim near one of the handles.

The planter is 22cm long from handle to handle, 5cm wide at it's broades point and 5.8cm high to the top of the handles. It weighs 200g.

The marks on the underside show WMF, EP, I/O and OX, which show that it is the pre-oxidised silver plate. There is also a product number 321, which is repeated on the brass grid showing that they do belong together, which you can also tell by the shape and fit.
