Description

A late 19th century wine decanter intaglio engraved and gilded, with typical period foliate decoration, handle and decoration indicate a Moser Bohemian piece. From the specific shape and design elements we would date this to the Vienna Secessionist period (circa 1895 to 1918 ), and strongly indicates manufacture by Koloman Moser who was a founding member of the Vienna Secessionists.

The design movement wasn't characterized by any one style but held together through a “Jugendstil”, or “youth style”, which was inspired by Germany’s adaptation of Art Nouveau. The Viennese version also used curving lines and made references to plants and nature, but evolved to emphasize simple, geometric forms and decoration. All of this being illustrated in this wine carafe/decanter.

The images highlight well the design principles and one can see from the handle design , the stopper and the intaglio naturalistic decoration how well Moser tied art and function together. The gold decoration is applied to the surface as well as to to intaglio, the stopper has a tear air bubble inside.

The condition is excellent with only minor age wear to the gilding on the stopper, there are no chips, nicks cracks to the glass and the handle is fixed perfectly. Stopper also original to the piece and fits properly.

Size: this is a light and small decanter height 27.5 cm (10 3/4 inches) and weighs 436 gms

Historical Note:
The Vienna Secession was founded on 3 April 1897 by artist Gustav Klimt, designer Koloman Moser, architects Josef Hoffmann and Joseph Maria Olbrich ,plus others. The goals stated at the founding included establishing contact and an exchange of ideas with artists outside Austria, disputing artistic nationalism, renewing the decorative arts creating a "total art", that unified painting, architecture, and the decorative arts
