Description

Late Regency Chinoiserie Pen work Box, Circa 1830.
A black and white octagonal ladies work box, decorated with chinoiserie penwork designs which depicts two seated figures which appear to be playing cards under the canopy of trees. The figures are centred within a framework of undulating leaf fronds. The elegance and beauty of the black and white composition only serves to emphasise the skills
and abilities of its creator. Penwork was an art form frequently practiced by women in the early 19th century, from 1815 to 1850. Much like the cross-stitch samplers and other skills which we associate with that period. The box retains its original red lacquer interior and is elevated upon small brass 'ball' feet.
