Description

A fine early 20th-century portrait of a lady by French artist, Edgar Boutry (1857-1939). She’s dressed in a highly fashionable black frilly blouse, embellished with a silver brooch, and a puffy black skirt worn above the hip. She also wears a light blue neck ribbon and two around her cuffs.

The early 1900s were known for their lavish excesses, opulent elegance and strict social rules. Within high society, taste was regarded as an important attribute as it helped to shape your own destiny and, in turn, the fortunes of your family.

As such, wealthy women dressed to impress in expensive fabrics such as silk, satin, damask and chiffon - often embroidered with ornate patterns and topped off with eye-catching headwear. With regards to hairstyles, as we see here, the main emphasis was to create a supportive base for a wide-brimmed hat. Women also tended to use hot curling irons to add a little flair.

This fine society lady sat for Edgar Boutry in 1909 - perhaps to celebrate her wedding given the prominence of her rings. At the time, Boutry was primarily known as a sculptor having created many fine bronzes, particularly in Northern France, so it’s interesting to consider how the two were introduced. His portraits are quite scarce so maybe he knew the lady (or her family) personally.

Boutry studied at the Lille Academic Schools and with Jules Cavelier at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He produced several statues in his hometown of Lille and his work is also housed in various public collections.

The portrait is signed/dated in the upper left.

Terms and conditions
Please be assured that we inspect every painting, drawing or print to check for issues relating to its condition during its time here with us. When we notice a fault or potential problem, we will note this down on the item's condition report, which can be found within each listing. We take various steps to ensure that your artwork will stand the test of time but we're unable to offer any warranties or guarantees as we're just one custodian in a potentially long line of previous owners.

Our inspections include a check for any signs of woodworm, historic or otherwise, as this is not unusual in antique frames or stretchers. If we discover any small holes, we treat the wood with a solution which states that "its deep penetration ensures effective protection for many years and prevents re-infestation". With this in mind, it's very unlikely that any future issues will occur, especially given that the wood may also have been treated by previous owners. However, as mentioned above, we are unable to provide any warranties or guarantees - just be assured that we care.

Also, many of the paintings include hanging equipment, namely wire or string. Sometimes this is already present when we purchase an item so we check to see if it's been attached correctly. However, we can't test the durability of this equipment as many of the paintings are sold quickly. So please do seek any advice if you're unsure how to hang your paintings correctly, especially if they're heavy, and do check on them from time to time.

If you have any questions at all, please just ask.
