Description

A magnificent and rare George 1st walnut, feather strung and crossbanded bureau bookcase of incredible size and with good provenance. The gilt heightened lotus leaf moulded cornice above an arch mirrored door flanked by gilt capped fluted Corinthian pilasters. The interior being fully fitted with pigeon holes and drawers and centred by a small cupboard door and central lower candle slide. The bureau base with fall front revealing a fully fitted interior with sliding well and shaped drawers and pigeon holes. The dummy frieze drawers flanked by loafers to support the bureau fall, above three graduated feather banded drawers to bracket feet. The bookcase belonged to Lady Victoria Scott, daughter of Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch, and married the 9th Marquis of Lothian, Schomberg Henry Kerr. The size of this piece of furniture is simply amazing being 24" across the bureau front, which makes this an exceptionally rare find. The bookcase has undertaken restoration in the 1920's, and has been fully polished by one of our skilled craftsmen.
