Description

We present for consideration, this scarce c1899 Leamington Spa made 12” dial fusee wall timepiece, by clock, watchmaker, and jeweller, Herbert William Cave, of 120 The Parade, Leamington, Warwickshire, (from where this clock would have been made).

• Walnut hand-turned roundhead walnut face and boxed cabinet with good, aged patination and colouring.
• Hinged inspection door located on the side of the box.
• Operable lockable regulator door located at the bottom of the box.
• Retains its original 12” metal dial with black Roman numerals and Cave’s details.
• Original pair of blued spade hands, secured with a pinned collet.
• Dial protected by a thick glaze mounted in a brass bezel, incorporating a canted silvered brass fillet to the interior.
• High-quality 8-day chain driven single fusee movement, with turned pillars and rectangular plates.
• Comes with its 65mm diameter pendulum bob, door key, and a brass winding key.

Born in Dover, Kent, in 1866, Cave was still plying his trade at Biggin Street, Dover in 1891 as seen on the year's census. However, sometime c1897 he relocated to Leamington with wife Alice and their infant son, Herbert Lionel Cave, yet it is not known why (or exactly when), he chose to do this from his native Dover, which is some distance away! What is known, is that Cave took over the premises of jewellers “W.H. Skinner” at 120 The Parade, Leamington, and that by c1906, he had moved away from clock and watchmaking, to become a sole high street jeweller with his son Herbert (Jr), (who eventually took over running the business when his father retired c1920).
