Description

A RARE surviving example of a mid-18th Century, Chinese Scholar's Box in Rosewood with fine inlaid mother of pearl decoration.

Inlaid decoration to top of lid depicting a rural scene with pagoda, riders on horseback, rocks, trees and birds. Further intricate decoration to the sides of the lid with flowers, birds and foliage. Inside the box is the original removable multi-compartment tray with metal rim. More beautiful inlaid mother of pearl decoration with birds and foliage around the base of the box.

The decoration to the base and the sides of lid remains in very good condition. There is some loss of mother of pearl mainly from the top of the lid and a few small pieces elsewhere. The top seam of the lid has some age shrinkage splits as illustrated. The lid and base are slightly 'out or round' after some 150 years (!) but fit together solidly when correctly aligned.

A similar example sold recently on a North American auction site for US$1025 (with less loss and shrinkage).

A really lovely and quite rare antique item.
