Seagull Alighting a wood-carving by Wharton Lang
Description
A wood carving depicting a seagull alighting by Wharton Lang. Carved in just before or after WW2 in St Ives, Cornwall. I believe the wood to be Sycamore on a mahogany panel. We have the original sale label showing it to have cost 17 guineas.Wharton Lang was born in Oberammergau, Bavaria, into a family background of wood carving and painting, and came to Britain in the mid-Thirties at an early age. Since then he has lived in Cornwall and has become well acquainted with its Atlantic coast and its wildlife.
He was taught the art of wood carving and sculpture by his father,Faust Lang.
The family moved to St.Ives in 1949 and became a part of its art community.
He is now an honorary member of "The Royal Society of Marine Artists", London, and was a member of the "Society of Wildlife Artists", as well as being a fellow of the "Royal Society of Artists".
Examples of his sculpture are in permanent exhibition at several museums as well as religious work in churches and convents.
