Description

During the American Civil War the Union States based whaling industry was decimated by the actions of the Confederate navy's commerce raiding so this sperm whale tooth is perhaps something of an anomaly. Celebrating a Confederate victory in probably the bloodiest battles of the war that they were shortly to loose - what are its origins?.
Was it booty from a Union whaling ship that fell victim to a Confederate ship: that was then decorated as a momento of General Lee's last successes?
Maybe an ex Confederate sailor gained employment in the whaling industry after the war and created this to remind him of the South's final triumphs.
Whatever its story this scrimshaw has an unusual subject and the true allegiance of its perpetrator will likely remain subject to conjecture.
Rather smaller than some of the grander teeth one sees it measures just under 5 inches long.
