Description

Cups with coconut bowls mounted in silver or silver-gilt and raised on a stem and foot, or multiple feet, were fashionable rarities in Western Europe in the late 15th century and throughout the 16th century. They were revived for a short period nearly three centuries later. This example we presume to be English although the absence of any hallmarking on its mounts might indicate that it is of colonial origin. The coconut shell itself is attractively marked and has a lustrous patination. Defects? - the screw employed to join shell to its turned base no longer holds them tightly, there are a couple of insignificant ancient hairline cracks extending down less than in inch from the rim and the rim mount itself has some deformation. In all however it displays well and is in good condition. Standing 5 inches high its is 3 1/2 inches across the rim and 3 inches across its base. Price includes free delivery within the UK.
