Description

A 16th Century Carved Oak Figure Of Mary Magdalene.

Oak sculpture of Mary carved in the round with traces of polychrome to the face.

She is kneeling with a single aroma vase next to her right knee with her hands clasped in prayer .

Mary is usually thought of as the second most important woman in the new testament after Mary the mother of Jesus and travelled with him as one of his followers ,she was also present with jesus at the crucifixion and resurrection .

This example that stands 20" tall is powerful in her simplicity, with two cracks one to the body and one to the side of the face, as is common with figures carved in the round , also a knot above the middle fold of her dress and her facing right arm has been secured with two nail (a long time ago as these show oxidisation ) .

In good condition with a natural surface.
