A Mid 18th Century Carved Newel Post Depicting A Soldier

A guardian of the stairs,this newel post depicting a soldier on guard with his chest armour and chain mail and discerning facial expression.

Standing on a later base this figure is assembled by four seperate carvings legs,torso,arms and head which is what gives it a folky feel instead of a classical figure carved in the solid form.

Made for a client who wanted the current look but could not afford the best quality.

Carved from what i feel is beech or chestnut and stained black.

Standing well at 20" high and 7" wide
