16th Century Carved Oak Figure Of St Denis Bishop Of Paris

Carved from a solid piece of french oak and showing faint traces of gesso this figure of St Denis with his head in his hands.

According to Christian tradition, St Denis is a christian martyr and saint. In the third century, he was bishop of paris. After his head was chopped off, Denis is said to have picked it up and walked six miles, preaching a sermon the entire way.

Signs of old worm damage but good definition and subject .
