Description

16th century English Carved Oak Corbel Depicting A Satyr.

Recently purchased from a private collection where it was obtained direct from a reclamation company that was taking down a timber framed house in Suffolk around 30yrs ago.

This corbel which dates to circa 1580-1600 would have been part of a pair that would have sat each side of the front door to ward off evil presence,a guardian so to speak.

The human torso with a grotesque face grimacing ,the arms curled up with goat like legs.

It reminds me of the character Puck from Shakespeare's midsummer nights dream .

In untouched condition ,a loss to the right arm and small loses to the face and hair.

Great surface and biscuit colour with traces of original paint.

An exciting discovery as this item has never been offered for sale on the open market before.
