Description

Late elizabethan carved oak chest circa 1580

The three panel lid over ,a large top rail carved with guilloche over ed arches.

The panels carved with arches and the uprights with guilloche and a flower above.

Plain two panel sides and a magnificent back showing signs of how the timber was cut and prepared.

Elaborate french escutcheon and three hinges,it was cheaper to import these items of metalwork than to make them here.

Overall in good condition a loss to one of the side panels but a solid piece.

Believed to originate from east sussex.
