Description:
Here is a stunning quality antique English William & Mary style walnut veneered cabinet on stand, circa 1950, in good condition. Consisting of an upper section with a cross grain ovolo moulded cornice, with a large secret moulded drawer below, there are two doors which open to reveal a central cabinet, with 2 adjustable mahogany shelves. This cabinet would be ideal for use as either a TV or drinks / cocktail cabinet. A thick waist moulding, with three small mahogany lined drawers to the frieze divides the cabinet. The stand is raised on six elegant barley twist walnut legs, united by wavy stretcher, terminating on bun feet. The doors feature decorative period carved key escutcheons, with a working brass lever door lock (with key) and an internal brass door latch to close the other door. Likewise, the three drawers feature quality period pear drop brass handles and matching back plates. The burr walnut veneers are beautifully figured and book matched both on the doors, between the pairs of drawers and on the top. The doors are decorated with stunning oyster banded veneers with fine boxwood string inlay geometric circles. Similar box wood string inlay and walnut cross banding can be seen on the small drawers. Even the inside of the doors are cross-banded with string inlay. The cabinet on stand dismantles into two sections for easy access into the house.
This is a beautifully proportioned piece, of outstanding original colour and patina. It would be near impossible to distinguish this piece from an original 17th century cabinet on stand, if it were not from the drawer linings and interior. This is testament to the craftsmanship and fine quality material and old period veneers used to construct this item. Queen Anne style antique furniture was in the main quite reserved with a focus on the quality and look of the veneers and with little or no carving.
The cabinet on stand boasts a rich warm brown walnut colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item is an excellent investment but also very practical and would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the living room or hallway. This item base would certainly grace any home. So don't miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.
Condition Report:
This item is in good condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges of the frame but nothing significant considering its age. Both doors close and lock comfortably. There are no warps or splits to the doors (which is common in cabinets like these). The doors lock using the original brass door latches, along with a working brass lever lock (with working key). The cross banding and inlay is in excellent condition, with no missing sections. The drawers comfortably slide out and close flush to the frame. The cabinet features top quality period brassware to the doors and drawers. This is a well-constructed cabinet on stand this is evident in the weight of the piece itself. It is solid in joint (does not wobble) and is ready to use.
