Whittington Travelling Chess Set circa 1900
This is an antique Whittington Travel Chess Set dating to approximately 1900. A truly portable Chess Set with chessmen of pegged form and carved from red-stained and natural bone. The case is Mahogany with Rosewood and Sycamore squares. The Whittington chessmen are always pegged representations of the headpieces of each of the six chessmen unlike the Jaques Satu Quo design which employs a different method to secure the pieces. Whittington style portable chess sets were available in several sizes, plus the pattern was produced by several manufacturers, including the British Chess Company.
The idea behind the Whittington (and all Status Quo hype chess sets) is a design that allows a game in progress to be discontinued and the position on the board retained for future play by using two hinged flaps which fold down over the chessboard, preventing the pegged chessmen from moving when the board is inverted. An advertisement for the Whittington chess set sold by Jaques from Staunton’s Chess-Player’s Handbook is shown here.
This travel chess set is in excellent condition, there are no losses and no breaks, the hinges are all as they should be and the securing hooks tight and all in place. It may benefit from a fresh wax. It has to be noted that the original owner has a lightly embossed name on the inside of one of the side walls. As one can see from the photographs it is almost invisible.
It measures 6″ by 3″ by 2-1/2″ high when folded closed. The playing area is 4 1/4 inches by 4 1/4 inches this excludes the lost pieces margin.
Historical Note:
John Jaques the Younger originally applied to register this design in 1852 but seems to have abandoned the application in favour of the In Statu Quo design. On 1st November 1852, provisional protection had been given to Jaques for a provisional patent application for “improvements in chess and draught boards.” That 1852 application may have been intended to be a first preliminary version of the In Statu Quo board. In the application, the design was specified without any accompanying drawings and was allowed to expire. However, its description very closely parallels the design of the Whittington chess set and clearly ties its DNA back to Jaques.
