Waltham Riverside watch, Cockerton Brass Band
Waltham Riverside pocket watch, Cockerton Brass Band.
The watch has a stem-winding movement, Riverside grade, model 1895, which is working nicely. The nicely patterned movement is fully signed and the serial number 7,342,533 dates it back to 1897. The movement has gold jewel settings, a Church 1892 micro regulator and a Breguet hairspring. The Riverside was produced in low numbers with just 1000 being produced in total (two runs of 500 in 1897).
The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has the most beautiful inscription... 'Presented to Mr Jno R Copping by the Members of the Cockerton Prize Brass Band, as a token of respect and esteem, on his retirement from the honorary secretaryship of the Band, 21st March 1902'. The case is in good condition, just a little wear near the hinge, probably from where it has rested in a pocket over the years.
The watch glass is in good condition.
The dial looks good to the naked eye. Through a jeweller's loupe, there is a faint hairline running down from between 11 and 12.
The watch comes in a new presentation box.
From
Cockerton Saxhorn Band was formed in 1863 when James Hoggett, the music teacher who lived at Beethoven House in Northgate, Darlington, first brought a number of young Cockerton men together to form a band.
The Cockerton Saxhorn Band's first engagement took place on August 22nd 1864, in the grounds of Cockerton Hall, and the band members played largely on borrowed instruments.
In 1870, the band became Cockerton Prize Silver Band as it is known today and in 1880, moved into a new rehearsal room at Cockerton Cocoa Palace opened in Forcett Street, a working men's club without alcohol.
Properly rehearsed, the band began to gain a reputation beyond Cockerton - but still they needed decent instruments. In 1889, they teamed up with the Shildon Temperance Band and raised £100 with a three-day musical bazaar in the Skinnergate Mechanics Institute.
This enabled the band to buy new instruments and patch up others and in 1905, when the Rise Carr Rolling Mills Band disbanded, Cockerton bought its set of silver-plated Besson instruments for £250.
Fast forward a few years and the Band are now celebrating their 150th anniversary. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
