Vintage Yogya Silver Pierced Spoon, Notodihardjo
This is an elegant Yogya 800 Silver Pierced Spoon from the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia. The stem is decorated in typical Yogya style with a combination of oriental lotus flower and western style scroll work. The pierced bowl has similar flower and scroll engraving.
The spoon is made by Notodihardjo and dates to around the period 1920-1940. Yogya silver takes its name from the city of Yogyakarta in central Java and primarily dates to the period between 1930 and 1970. Notodihardjo was one of the few silversmiths who predated and overlapped with this period, being founded around 1917. Virtually all Yogya silver is in 800/1000 grade purity.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the most minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after this period of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoon is 14.7cm / 5.8ins long and weighs a very respectable 29.6g / 1oz of solid silver.
Yogya silver is traditionally marked with the silver purity, almost always 800, and initials representing the maker. Often these are combined into a single mark but here we have 800 in one diamond mark and ND in a second diamond for Notodihardjo.
