This is such a fun collector's piece or wedding anniversary gift. So quirky - the lid & base have been given an 'antiqued' effect & they do look 70 years old plus & then when the compact is opened the inside is gleaming - the 70 year old brass has acquired the most beautiful golden patina & it is unused. Not a trace of powder & all the original accessories pristine & gorgeous! I will start with the lid - the original foil mirror sticker states this compact has a 'GOLD PLATE ON SILVER FINISH BY PILCHER'. I believe this means the exterior brass case has been finished with silver plate & on top of this is a thin layer of gold. Then the compact has an etched effect to create the 'antiqued' look. The effect of this is a contrast between the exposed silver & gold plate, the numbers & the whimsically engraved 'Happy Anniversary'. The lid decoration qualifies this compact to be classed as a novelty compact. The lid opens to reveal the gleaming interior shown on images 3 & 4. The original paper strip is fitted around the inner lid & holds the beautiful puff in place. The adorable salmon pink puff is signed 'Pilcher' in gilt letters. The powder well is pristine & lined with an expensive looking wax paper insert decorated with stylized shapes which bear a resemblance to foliage. The original inspection docket is present - 'Inspected by No. 1'. Around the powder well is a clean white border of felt which would have acted as a seal. The mirror bears the aforementioned original foil sticker & gives a good accurate reflection, however there is some age related wear to the mirror & this is reflected in the price of this compact. The base can be seen on image five & like the lid is is antique looking. The original box is super - in such good condition for a cardboard box over seventy years old & it is very charming. The original shop sticker is in place & it reads 'Jarman's GREETING CARDS GIFTS - STATIONARY 5603 BROAD ST.' The original J. V. Pilcher box reads as follows - 'If it's beautifully PERFECT and perfectly BEAUTIFUL...it's by Pilcher since 1885' on both the front & back & the on the edges - 'it's by Pilcher'.
This rare antique compact measures 7.3cm x 7.3 cm & weighs 24.3 grams.
