Vintage Folio, Civil Architecture, English
Our Stock # 18.9529
This is a vintage folio A Treatise on the Decorative Part of Civil Architecture. An unbound reproduction of the 18th century original by Sir William Chambers, printed in 1969.
Born in Sweden, Sir William Chambers (1723 - 1796) was an 18th century British architect, his time with the Swedish East India Company taking him to China, where he studied architecture and decoration. After a spell in Paris and Italy, his return to Britain in 1755 saw the opening of an architecture practice in London. Treatise on Civil Architecture (1759) was an influential title, with information and renditions of the classical orders. The title was changed from the third edition onwards to reflect its more decorative approach to architecture. His works include the Gold State Coach still in use by The Royal Family and The Great Pagoda in Kew Gardens, London.
Large size folio, unbound with pages intact
Reproduced with permission from the original, held by the Royal Institute of British Architects
This Third Edition features the revised title, as published in 1791
Printed in English across approximately 157 pages, including illustrations
Great detail of the Classical Orders and their use in architecture
