Vintage 9ct Gold on Silver Cuff Links, c.1930s/40s

Here we have a very stylish set of Vintage 9ct Gold on Silver Cuff Links. The chain linked cuff links are oval in shape with a engine turned design which the makers have called Sparta. They come supplied in a modern gift box.
9ct Gold on Silver is not the same as gold plating. It is a sandwich with a central layer of silver bonded to 9ct gold layers above and below. The gold is at least ten times thicker then you get with gold plated items. The technique was developed in the 19th century but came into its own in the economic depression of the 1930s when people were looking at a cheaper alternative to solid gold that still gave very good quality.
The cuff links were made near Birmingham by jewellers and silversmiths Henry Griffith & Sons and date to around the 1930s / 1940s. Henry Griffith founded his firm in the 1870s, becoming Henry Griffith & Sons around 1890. They specialised in silver and gold jewellery, smoking accessories and small personal items. In 1919 they relocated to Leamington Spa in Warwickshire and remained in business until at least the late 1970s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The oval cuff links are 2cm by 1.3cm and each pair is 2.4cm in length. The set weighs in at 11.4g.
The cuff links are marked on the back with 9ct Gold & Silver, the makers' mark of H.G & S for Henry Griffith & Sons and the design name Sparta.
