Victorian Silver Sifter Spoon, Hayne & Cater, 1840

This is a good quality early Victorian Sterling Silver Sifter Spoon in the King's Husk pattern. This is a variation on the traditional King's Pattern which omits the honeysuckle motif on the stem. The sifter has a crest of a lion holding an object between its paws engraved at the top of the stem.
The sifter spoon was made in London by noted silversmiths Samuel Hayne and Dudley Cater and dates to 1840. The firm traced its origin back to a business started by Thomas Wallis in around 1758. His son, Thomas Jnr, formed a partnership with Jonathan Hayne in 1810 and Hayne eventually took sole control of the firm in 1821. He was succeeded by his son Samuel Hayne who took Dudley Cater as his partner in 1836. They finally ceased trading in 1865.
Overall condition is good but there is a very small split between one of the pierced elements and the top rim of the bowl. The sifter does however remain perfectly functional. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The sifter spoon is 16cm / 6.3ins long and 5.5cm / 2.1ins across the bowl. It weighs in at a very respectable 67.3g / 2.37oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are well struck and clear to read with just some distortion to the makers' mark due to the pattern. They ahow the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the Gothic date letter E for 1840, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the S H over D C makers' mark for Samuel Hayne and Dudley Cater.
