Victorian Silver Basket, Atkin Brothers, 1893
Here we have a good quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Bonbon Basket with a swing handle. The basket is oval in shape and stands on a fluted pedestal foot. The body has pierced panels in geometric designs separated by beaded scrolls. The handle is pierced with graduated circles to either side of a blank cartouche.
The basket is made in Sheffield by the renowned silversmiths Atkin Brothers and dates to 1893. The firm traced its origins back to Thomas Law in the mid 18th century, with Henry Atkin joining in 1824, after which his family gradually took control. They became Atkin Brothers in 1853 and were finally bought out in 1958.
Condition is very good apart from a small dent to the foot towards one end of the oval and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after nearly 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The basket is 15.3cm / 6ins long, 13cm / 5.1ins across and 11.3cm / 4.4ins high with the handle upright. It weighs a substantial 145.1g / 5.1oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter a for 1893 and the HA makers' mark for Harry Atkin of Atkin Brothers.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the basket.
