Wilkinson & Son were renowned for quality, fine quality cabinet making and beautiful design.
The firm of Wilkinson was established circa 1790 by William Wilkinson, working in partnership with a relation Thomas Wilkinson.
By 1808 William had established a business of his own at 14 Ludgate Hill. From this prime location in the heart of the City, Wilkinson built up a flourishing trade, winning significant commissions from such distinguished clients as the Goldsmith's Company. A versatile designer and craftsman, Wilkinson worked in a variety of styles, producing antique furniture in the Egyptian, Rococo, and Grecian manner (see Christopher Gilbert and Geoffrey Beard eds., The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840, Leeds, 1986, pp. 977-978) William Wilkinson was very successful going forward with his business. Some of his first furniture was stamped `WILKINSON LUDGATE HILL’. In 1825 William brought his three sons William, Ayscough and Charles into the partnership and after this date furniture was stamped `WILKINSON & SONS 14 LUDGATE HILL’.
William Wilkinson died in 1833 and after this date his sons changed the furniture mark to W & C WILKINSON 14 LUDGATE HILL.
After William’s death his widow sold her share to his brother Charles who then moved the business to 8 Bond Street, London in 1855.
An early Victorian table bearing the stamp `Wilkinson & Sons, 8 Old Bond Street, 5659', sold Sotheby's, Stokesay Court, 28 September 1994, lot 299. It would therefore appear that the firm moved to a Bond Street premises after the 1840 dateline parameter in Beard and Gilbert's survey.
Most stamped furniture from this period onwards would be stamped Wilkinson & Son 8 Old Bond Street. In 1871 the business was passed to Charles eldest son, Frederick. The building 8 Bond Street, was demolished in 1909 the company, re-named Hindley & Wilkinson, who moved to 70/71 Welbeck Street, London. They were eventually absorbed by Marshall & Snelgrove in about 1918.
