Victorian Brass Tipstaff
This is a brass tipstaff on a walnut shaft, measuring 17 cm long. It has a crown on top and stamped with the numbers "27". The cross above the crown bears a resemblance to the Maltese Cross, but we can find no reference to these being used in Malta.
The tipstaff was used as a delightful symbol of authority and dates back to the time of Chaucer and The Canterbury Tales, when he refers to it as "a staff tipped with horn" in the Somnours Tale. They were also made in silver, but these are very rare and almost never come onto the market. We feel quite privileged to have come across this brass example. All items are sold with a 14 day money back guarantee. In the unlikely event that you are unhappy with your purchase, we will gladly issue a refund (excluding carriage costs). The item must be returned in the same condition as it left us. The refund will be issued on the item's return to our premises.
