Unusual solid mahogany jewellery – table box that lends itself to a very wide range of uses. It is very difficult to date the box with a high degree of certainty as it is unusual in terms of the style of the interior and dimensions. One thing for certain it is of extremely sturdy construction. In some respects it is similar in build quality to boxes made for the medical and/or military professions. Please note the use of solid mahogany and the dovetail joints and brass screws to the top as features of the box. The features are frequently in evidence on gun boxes, surgeons boxes, homeopathic boxes, apothecary boxes and for military and scientific instruments made throughout the 1800s and beyond. No shrinkage splits. Unspoilt patina. Even colour and grain. There are a few ‘digs’ and marks as to expected on any box of such an age but I would certainly state that they are FAR less than expected and equally certain less than what is often termed as ‘commensurate with use’….Basically because this box has had very little use!! Original shield style cartouche and surround to the escutcheon. The lid closes perfectly square. Brass ‘stop’ hinges and lock in excellent condition with a replacement working key supplied. Sprung front drawer, again solid mahogany throughout with hand cut dove tail joints. The drawer base is made up of 2 separate pieces that slide into ‘v’ cut slots, screwed to the rear underside and further supported by side strips and a central strip. This item was certainly built to last!!! The drawer is released by pressing down upon an original brass rod located to the box interior between the two hinges and automatically locks in position when the drawer is closed. The drawer springs open nicely when released assisted by 3 original springs. Given the working key all contents of the box can be made secure. The lid interior features what is more than likely the original mahogany framed mirror….all in perfect condition. The main storage area features 10 open storage sections of various dimensions plus 3 ‘secret sections. One is accessed by pressing down along the back edge of the base within the smaller middle section. The other 2 secret sections are accessed by raising the dividers of the 2 rear corner storage areas whereupon an original solid mahogany secret drawer springs out. The measurements of the front drawer are, 29cm x 9.5cm x 4.5cm (height). The height of the largest 3 sections in the main storage areas are 7cm, the other areas varying between 3.5-5 cm height. A very well made piece of woodenware, with an extremely high degree of original features in a condition certain to please. RECOMMENDED.
