Unusual Dutch Sewing Casket walnut burr walnut marquetry %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Circa 1820, a very unusual walnut and burr walnut marquetry inlaid Dutch sewing casket. The casket has a wonderful shape and double raised top with a small lid which has a finial on it which appears to be of a bunch of gilded grapes. The top section is hinged and opens to reveal a small area which is velvet lined. This section lifts off to reveal an open section which is oak lined. The top section of the casket has cast brass lifting handles on either side and is bombe shaped. Each panel is veneered in burr walnut and has wonderful floral marquetry throughout. The middle section is a slight ogee shape and one section opens to reveal a small drawer. Below this are rectangular panels, again smothered in marquetry, and the panel below has another long drawer. The bottom of the casket has a shaped apron at the front and stands on 4 squat bun feet. The piece has excellent colour and condition. Very unusual and stylish.
