When his father died, he took over the family antique jewellery and antique clock making business with the help of his mother. He became very successful and moved from his shop on Stockwell Street in Greenwich to his soon-to-be famous shop in Cheapside, London, in 1847. He became the biggest retailer of Swiss watches. His activities led to the foundation of the British Horological Institute.
