Thomas Stanley Barber d. 1899 Oil Waterfall
We are delighted to offer for sale this wonderful oil on canvas by the artist THOMAS STANLEY BARBER, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a mountainous scene with a small river gushing over rocks in the foreground. The banks are covered with deciduous trees with grassy slopes beyond. The artist's ability to create the waterfall in such a realistic manner is masterful and it is probably for this reason that he tended to specialise in such scenes.
In October 2011 his painting of Mellincourt Falls achieved £1,063 at Christie's and a pair of 15" x 8" river scenes reached over £1,000 at the same auction in January 2011.
THOMAS STANLEY BARBER, who died in 1899, was a London landscape artist, who lived at 36 Riverdale Road, Highbury in North London. He exhibited one painting at the Manchester City Art Gallery in 1891 but obviously found a ready market for his work without the need to exhibit and his paintings achieve high prices today.
He is listed in the Dictionary of British Artists and his work often appears in Hislop's Guide to the UK Art Market.
Auction results achieved for works by this artist may be found at artnet.com (46 listings), artprice.com (45), arcadja.com (20) and findartinfo.com (22).
The painting is framed in its original 5" gilt frame and slip and is ready to hang.
