This is a lovely Regency burr yew sewing box
ABOUT THIS BOX:
This is a lovely Regency burr yew sewing box string in boxwood around the lid and sides of the box. The lid has delicate rosewood crossbanding. On the sides are lion ring handles, still with some of the original gilt on it. The sewing box sits on lion paw brass feet.
Inside the lid has its original pink silk decoration. There is a lift out tray with two compartments. One divider is missing and one interior pompom on the underside of the lid is missing.
WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT THIS PIECE:
This is a lovely piece that would grace any home or collection. However, what makes this box truly special are the items within it. There are a lovely set of white gloves only big enough to fit on the hands of a baby. These were clearly of significant sentiment. There is an unfinished project decorating the outside of a linen cloth. There is a souvenir of 1800’s pins with the name of Susan. And there are a multitude of thread holders, one with the name of Ida on it in ink.
What struck me about this piece was how well cared for it had been. There was no missing veneer. No missing stringing. Gilt was still visible in places on the handles. The interior was nearly complete. In addition, the contents were things of importance to the owners of the box. There is such a sense of calm and well being about this box. I realise that can sound odd, but for me it made this box special.
