'Table Bay, Cape of Good Hope' W J Huggins
This is a fabulous engraving by T.Sutherland after the original painting by W J Huggins (Marine Painter to His Majesty)
British and Norwegian Royal Naval gun ships can be seen in the fore and middle ground, with other ships in the distance. Also in the foreground is a small sailing vessel with sailors and provisions aboard.
The whole scene is overlooked by distinctive Table Mountain and the small settlement of Cape Town on the foreshore.
The wording underneath reads
"To His Excellency The Right Honorable Lord Charles Henry Somerset, Governor and Commander in Chief of the Cape of Good Hope, etc etc"
"This picture is most respectfully dedicated, by the most obedient humble servant W.J. Huggins"
The engraving was created and published by T. Sutherland, Pall Mall, London, in 1824 (these details can be read in small print at the foot of the picture)
Newly and expertly framed with a stylish double mount (cream / blue) and gilt frame with red accents which beautifully compliments the colours within the picture.
