A superb Georgian oak candle box. The box is beautifully made in oak crossbanded with walnut and line inlaid with contrasting boxwood. There are three small spice drawers in the base and the lid top opens to store the candles. The lid was originally hinged with leather which obviously degraded over the years and the current hinges are Victorian replacements. The top is fret cut to hang on the wall with two lovely silhouette tulips. The whole is in excellent untouched condition with a great patina and colour. The reverse of the box retains the most wonderful piece of provenance indicating the box was purchased from an estate sale in 1898 and had been made by the grandfather of the deceased. C.1800.
