Stone Carving by John Takawira, Zimbabwe
A Springstone carving in the very hard black serpentine by African sculptor, John Takawira (1939-1989) of Zimbabwe. John used his work to express his own feelings about the Shona religion and its beliefs about contact with the spirit world.
At the age of twenty Takawira was introduced to sculpture by his uncle Joram Mariga and was immediately noticed by Frank McEwen, founding director of the new Rhodes National Gallery who invited him to become one of the first members of the Workshop School at what is now the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
This carving shows a mythical creature, perhaps fish, perhaps mammal, carved in the smooth and rugged mix which was his trademark style. It is a very tactile artwork. All items are sold with a 14 day money back guarantee. In the unlikely event that you are unhappy with your purchase, we will gladly issue a refund (excluding carriage costs). The item must be returned in the same condition as it left us. The refund will be issued on the item's return to our premises.
