Staffordshire Tenderness group circa 1795.
A charming pearl glazed earthenware (pearlware) figure of couple with sheep, with overglazed enamel painted decoration. The piece was made in the Staffordshire Potteries, possibly by one of the Wood family John, Enoch or Ralph in the late 18th century.
It was made during the reign of George 3rd, probably in the years 1795 to 1800.
The blue tint to the glaze gives a lovely effect as does the plinth which has tenderness in the old English spelling of "Tendernefs", where any letter 's' other than the last one in the word, was displayed as an 'f'.
There is no damage apart from the one and obvious issue of the tree or bocage has been broken off at some stage in its life. The remaining stump can be seen in the photograph of the reverse. However I think this is such a lovely subject and still looks fabulous without the bocage, and is a very early example, that it deserves a good home that can accept its fault.
It stands 6 inches to the top of the hat.
UK postage is included in the price. For international shipping, please contact us for a price.
We want our customers to be satisfied with their purchases, so we offer a money back guarantee. Items must be returned within 14 days and in the same condition as sent. Please note that postage and shipping costs are non-refundable.
