Small London wheel barometer by Somalvico
An excellent quality mahogany wheel barometer with rare 6" dial.
The unusual 6" diameter silvered brass dial calibrated from 28" to 31" with weather indications, star engraving to the centre and the makers name and place of work, J. Somalvico & Son, 91 Hatton Garden, London. The barometer reading is indicated by a blued steel hand and can be recorded with a brass set hand controlled with the set key below the main dial. The dial is enclosed within a glazed convex brass bezel. The silvered brass scale is calibrated from 0º to 120º Fahrenheit and is set beneath a bowed glass and has the option of removing it for measuring the temperature elsewhere. Also with hygrometer to the top and a bubble level to the base of the barometer with foliage engraving. The mahogany veneered case with high quality flame veneers throughout and edged with ebony inlay. The swan neck top with ebony paterea and brass finial.
Note The Somalvico family worked from the early 18th century until the end of the 19th century. They were mostly based in Holborn, London and specialised in high quality instruments.
