Silver Slow Beat English Lever Fusee James Carter
Silver Slow Beat English Lever Fusee by James Carter Patent Thomas Yates Hallmarked Chester 1853.
Thomas Yates was established as a watchmaker in Preston England in 1843 and like many of his fellow watchmakers he sought to improve the English Lever. In 1846 he took out a patent for a new half-second dead beat watch movement.
Dial: The cream enamel dial has black roman numerals, gilt spade hands, an inner sunken second’s dial and is signed Yates Patentee.
The glass is in very good condition.
Movement: The fusee movement is signed James Carter Warrigton and numbered 1168 and has a dust cap. When the watch is working, due to the slow beat escapement, you get the impression when you look at the balance its about to stop. The watch is key wind at the rear and set at the front and comes with a key.
Case: The plain smooth case is numbered 5912 and shows Chester Hallmark of 1853.
History:Yates Slow Beat: Rare Slow Beat English Lever Fusee by Thomas Yates 1882. Thomas Yates was established as a watchmaker in Preston England in 1843 and like many of his fellow watchmakers he sought to improve the English Lever. When the watch is working due to the slow beat escapement you get the impression when you look at the balance its about to stop.
In 1846 he took out a patent for a new half-second dead beat watch movement. Most watches from this era had escapements designed to beat 14,400 times per hour but Yates decided this did not mean good timekeeping and designed a 7,200 train altering the gear ratios and increasing the size of the balance believing the watch would have to do less work.
