Silver Kay's Climax Lever pocket watch, 1893
A silver Kay's Climax Lever pocket watch, 1893.
The watch has a key-wound movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed Kay & Co, Guaranteed English Manufacture. There should be a loose fitted cover over the movement but, as so often happens, it has gone missing over the years.
William Kay set up Kays of Worcester in 1890. Customers bought items from handbills in a folder and initially the goods on offer were limited to antique jewellery, watches, antique clocks and household items. Eventually William’s son Jack took over the running of the business. The company continued to expand and trade successfully, becoming one of Worcester’s largest employers.
The watch itself measures 50mm diameter excluding the stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside the two case backs for Chester 1893, with a maker's mark for Kay & Co. The case is in good condition, just a little unevenness to the back and rubbing to the engine turned detail.
The watch glass is in good condition.
The signed dial has a few hairline cracks but they are faint.
The watch will be sent in a new presentation box. ALL PRICES INCLUDE UK POSTAGE (excluding Northern Ireland).
