Silver 1917 Koh-I-Noor pocket watch and chain
Silver 1917 Koh-I-Noor pocket watch with chain.
The Koh-I-Noor was probably named after one of the most famous diamonds in human history. The Persian word Koh-I-Noor means mountain of light. The diamond’s magnanimous traits and size make it a most desirable precious stone. Kohinoor's ownership has always been a topic of controversy.
This particular watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.
The watch measures 47mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and it is hallmarked for London (import mark), 1917 with a sponsor’s mark for George Stockwell.
From 1 June 1907, Stockwells acted as assay agents, facilitating the import into Britain of foreign gold and silver items which had to be assayed and hallmarked in a UK assay office before being released for retail.
The case has some unevenness around the bezel but otherwise is in good condition. The engine turned detail to the back of the watch is still nice and crisp and there is a vacant cartouche to the centre.
The watch glass has light marks across it.
The visible part of the dial is in good condition with blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers. If the front cover is opened, there is a chip to the edge of the dial.
The watch comes with a single chain, unhallmarked but probably Continental silver. It measures 31cm long.
The watch and chain will be sent in a new presentation box.
