A fine example of a seventeenth century oak bible box. The box has the most wonderful carved and inlaid front. The carving is of typical stylised foliage and scrollwork and is deep and finely done the edge of the front is inlaid in holly and bog oak in a parquetry pattern. The box has had a different lock and hinges fitted, probably in the eighteenth century, and the lid has split and been strapped with wooden lathes. The whole is in great untouched condition with a good original colour and patina and amazingly retains the original candlebox interior. This is an excellent example of it's type and quite a rarity. C.1670.
