Description:
This is a fine quality Art Deco Ruhlmann style macassar ebony hall table, most likely commissioned for Harrods, London, circa 1970, in good original condition, ideal as a hall or console table. Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann was a renowned French designer, who influenced a style of French Art Deco Furniture in 1920’s and 1930’s. Like most of items of this style and age, this table was most likely commissioned for the Harrods department store in London, due to its quality. The top boasts stunning sunburst veneers, with a square inset moulded edge. Below, two cupboard doors (which open using a push button click mechanism) open to reveal several shelves and sections (the two central shelf heights can be adjusted by our cabinet maker, if they are not suitable for your requirements). The top three central shelves, will fit a standard size bottle of wine (75cl). The door panels and frieze are decorated with stunning rosewood and boxwood string and dot inlay. The shaped frieze is raised on four ebonized block feet. The table displays solid craftsmanship and is extremely heavy, which is always a sign of quality. This piece boasts classic Art Deco styling in the overall design of the curved corners, clean “stepped” lines to top and the choice of materials.
The table displays a rich dark brown and black colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a beautiful mellow patina, which has been generated by the years of cleaning and care it has received. This truly is a very beautiful item with quality construction. This item would certainly grace any home, so don’t miss out on your chance to own such a lovely item.
This is an extremely useful piece of antique furniture and a great asset to have in any living or dining room, as they consume very little space.
History of Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann
Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann (28 August 1879 – 15 November 1933), his first names often seen reversed as Jacques-Émile, was a renowned French designer of furniture and interiors, epitomising for many the glamour of the French Art Deco style of the 1910s and 1920s. He was born in Paris to Alsatian parents who were in the general decorating business. When his father died in 1907, he took over the family firm. In 1919 Ruhlmann founded, with Pierre Laurent, the company Ruhlmann et Laurent, specializing in interior design and producing luxury home goods that included antique furniture, wallpaper and lighting. By this time, Ruhlmann was making formal elegant furniture using precious and exotic woods in combination with ivory fittings, giving them a classic, timeless appeal. Ruhlmann's legacy as a designer was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2004. In 2009, he was called the "Art Deco's greatest artist" by the New York Times.
