Royal System Teleskop Room Divider by Poul Cadoviu
Danish Royal System
Teleskop Room Divider model
by Poul Cadovius c 1955
The system we have for sale within our shop is the Royal System Teleskop Room Divider by Danish Design Icon Poul Cadovius. Unusual because it’s a room divider rather than wall mounted shelving system. Rarer still because it is two bays wide and comes complete with the manufacturer’s paperwork.
You’ll note the wood is Afrormosia, a CITES protected timber – so shall require an exemption certificate when sold. Cheeky Highlander will organise that.
The ROYAL SYSTEM shelving was designed by Poul Cadovius back in 1948 and was produced for many decades in over 24 countries way into the 1980s, many times under licence.
Records of Serial numbers were never kept, neither were production drawings – just old catalogues and vintage furniture remain. However, the founder of dk3 (Jacob Plejdrup - CEO, Creative Director & Owner ) who now manufactures the new Royal System (with permission of the late Poul Cadovius) has identified the parts used in our piece as circa 1955.
The thickness of the rare timber coupled with the thick brass fittings really scream quality. These pieces are rare and this model (Teleskop) rarer still, it refers to the ability of the feet and ceiling mounts to be altered to fit different height ceilings upto 2.4m.
Its set up in our shop, call us for a viewing and remember the particular arrangement of the unit can change to suit your own taste and needs.
Price includes UK mainland delivery – please call for price on global shipping.

Royal System
As described by dk3 on their website:
Design by Poul Cadovius, 1948
The iconic shelving system Royal System® was designed in 1948 by legendary Danish designer and manufacturer Poul Cadovius and relaunched by dk3 in 2010. It was one of the world's first wall-mounted furniture systems and was created on the innovative principle to move the furniture off the floor and onto the walls.
Poul Cadovius saw a challenge in the heavy furniture, that took up a lot of floor space, and by introducing the new system he wanted to add more space and light into the furnishing.
As he put it himself:
"Most of us live on the bottom of a cube. If we put the walls even with the floor, we get a lot of space to live on".
His design breakthrough went on to launch a whole industry that is still going today and included manufactures such as Ladderax.
Poul Cadovius
Poul Cadovius (1911 - 2011) produced one of the most internationally successful Danish designs of the 1950s and 60s: the Royal System.
Cadovius was born in Frederiksberg and originally trained as a saddler and upholsterer before turning to furniture design. He developed the original concept for the Royal System in 1948 as a means of freeing up valuable floor space from ever-increasing clutter.
As Cadovius observed, "Most of us live on the bottom of a cube. If we were to use the walls in the same way we use the floor, we would get more space to live in."
The Royal System was an immediate international success, due to its infinite flexibility and efficiency, and Cadovius founded the furniture company CADO in the late 1950s in order to meet demand. CADO subsequently took over the renowned Danish furniture manufacturing company France & Sons and at one point employed a workforce of 300 and exported products to over 30 countries. The original concept expanded to an extensive family of storage solutions and Cadovius took out over 400 patents to protect his work.
The Royal System was recognised with Gold Medal at Finland Furniture Fair in 1950 and silver at the Milan Triennale, establishing a for wall storage design.
