Highly attractive brass bound solid mahogany antique jewellery – table box of superior quality construction. Solid mahogany with even colour and grain. No replaced wood. No shrinkage splits. Inlaid top handle with a nice finishing touch of brass roundels to the tips. Please note the curved corners to the inlaid brass strips to the top of the lid. Usually such inlays have right angles corners and there would normally be 8 separate pieces of brass used rather than just the 4 used on this box. Though possible regarded as a minor detail it DOES enhance the appearance and it certainly would have required more skill in the making. It is however the extent of the triple horizontal brass bands each continuous strip extending from the vertical brass bands at the front of the box to those at the rear. All is original, all firmly fixed not with tapered brass pins but with brass screws that have lay perfectly flush. All are original and it is no wonder that the bands have remained in situ given the high number of screw fixings!! The lid closes perfectly square on the original brass stop hinges. Original lock with a replacement working key supplied, a tiny bit fiddly but it DOES work!! The box interior has another indication of fine quality due to the inlaid brass corner pieces to both the lid and base sections. The interior is lacquered mahogany throughout and is in extremely clean condition. A removable panel has been added to the base section and is reversible…..red card surface to one side….blue velvet like surface to the other. It can simply be removed/turned over via a subtle pull tab/triangular cut out located to the bottom left front corner. Though the combination of mahogany and brass bands was quite popular during the Georgian/Victorian period this example stands out and will no doubt sit well and command attention in any setting and lends itself to a wide range of uses. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
