This stern looking, but rather adorable household god is Guan Di, a popular god in the neighbourhood temples and household shrines of southern China.

Dating from the Qing Dynasty, Guan Di sits on a throne and holds his sword. He is intricately carved, retains his original paintwork of 'auspicious' gold and red lacquer, and has whiskers to rival 'ZZ Top'.

Guan Di was originally an emperor who united the three warring states of China and, in Chinese mythology, became the god of martial arts, law and diplomacy. Traditionally, Guan Di had a courteous manner, a knowledge of literature and fortunetelling ability.

The Chinese Cultural Revolution swept away the old traditions, and it is now difficult to find household gods which are as beautifully modelled as this one, and in such good condition.
Guan Di would add pzazz to a traditional interior, and soul to a modern one.
