Princess Margaret Wedding 1960 - Kneeling Hassock

1 of 5
An original item used at the Wedding of Princess Margaret to Antony Armstrong-Jones, this cream leather Hassock (kneeling cushion) is embellished with gold script extending to all four sides ‘To Commemorate The Royal Wedding Of H.R.H Princess Margaret, Westminster Abbey, London 1960’ and to the top the words Westminster Abbey, London 6th May 1960 surmounted by a gold crown.
The wedding of Queen Elizabeth II’s younger and vivacious sister was a global news event and was watched by 300 million people worldwide. It was a ‘fairy tale wedding’ and the first time that a King’s daughter had married a ‘commoner’ and Margaret was a hugely popular princess, stylish and intelligent, occasionally scandalous – she was ahead of her time in her understanding of the importance of the relationship between the British Royal family and the press.
The ceremony itself was attended by her family and by European Royalty, by foreign dignatories, politicians and socialites. Westminster Abbey has been the host for numerous Royal weddings and ceremonies since 1066.
This Hassock was clearly treasured and carefully kept since 1960 and is in excellent antique condition.
With the Hassock there is an original copy of ‘The Approved Souvenir Programme Published By Gracious Permission Of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother’ which contains 31 pages and many black and white photographs of Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones, and other members of the Royal Family. It shows the wedding procession routes and detailed order of service as conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. Also a copy of Princess Margaret’s 19th Birthday book with numerous photographs which perfectly capture both the Princess at leisure at in her official duties and a snapshot of life in post WWII Europe.
Also an original copy of Princess Margaret’s Wedding day with a large number of colour photographs from the day including of the oak pews with the Abbey in which these leather Hassocks were used.
A rare and beautiful memento of a rare and beautiful woman.
Dimensions are:
14 inches wide, 9 inches deep and 5 inches high.
For metric please multiply by 2.5 I describe and photograph my pieces accurately and with the aim that on arrival each will exceed expectations.
