Peacock Design Brass Box, Kinco, c.1925-39
This stunning peacock design brass cigarette box was made between the wars by Kinco. Kinco started making art metalware in 1924 from their base in Eden Street in Kingston-upon-Thames, from where the company took its name. Around 1930 they moved to larger premises across the river in Twickenham and carried on until the outbreak of war in 1939.
The ornate design was machine made and the background colour, in this case black on the lid and red around the sides, was carefully added by hand. Both Queen Mary and the future Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother were enthusiastic purchasers of Kinco products.
The box is made in brass with a cedarwood lining and stands on four bun feet. The lid sides and interior are all in good condition and the hinge works nicely. There is quite a bit of spotting to the underside, where it has probably been damp at some point in its life but the baseplate is nevertheless completely sound and does not detract from the attractiveness of the box.
Dimensions are 17.8cm wide by 9cm deep by 5.6cm high.
This is a stylish and unusual period piece which can be accurately dated to the period 1925 to 1939 as this was the only time during which Kinco were producing these items.
Shipping cost in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
