Papua New Guinea Carved & Painted Gope Board
This is a colourful vintage Gope Board from the Papuan Gulf possessing a wonderful abstract design highlighted in white lime and black on a red ochre background. Gope boards have a consistent elliptical shape and vary in length with this one being at the smaller end of the range. They were carved with a representation of an ancestral hero and were believed to protect clansmen from evil spirits and enemies. They were carried in raids on other clans and headhunting missions where the spirits contained within the boards were considered to sap the strength of their adversaries. It is unlikely that this board was ever used for this purpose but made specifically to sell to visitors in the mid 20th century or later.
In the last photograph it is shown with two other carvings acquired from the same source and, presumably, purchased in Papua New Guinea at a similar time.
Dimensions: Height 103 x Width 23 x thickness 1.5 cm
Weight 1.05 kg
Condition: The board is in reasonable vintage condition though some of the white lime has worn off.
Postage & packing: This can be posted in the UK for £15. We can also deliver to international destinations at reasonable cost - please contact us for a quote.
